Welcome back to the new academic year at Elston Hall! We hope that you had a fantastic holiday and the children have been able to recharge their batteries!

This year, we are continuing with our exciting, thematic approach, allowing children to make connections between areas of learning and consolidate skills. All the themes chosen, deliver the programmes of study for the National Curriculum and this term our first topic will be ‘A World of Bright Ideas’ which focuses on the creative process of invention and design. Pupils will look at important inventions over time, before moving on to learning about more current issues such as patenting and copyright.

In our Science work, we will be studying ‘Electricity’, followed by “Animals Including Humans”.

Homework in Year 6 will be a little different to other year groups as we focus on consolidating learning but also exposing the children to test-style questions. The children will be given reading, SpaG and maths homework fortnightly on a Tuesday. They will be stapled together or formed as a booklet. This homework will then be stored in a folder, in their drawer. Sometimes we may give additional art or thematic homework. Children will also be expected to read at home daily as well as being heard read at school each week.

Support for spellings (phonics) will mainly be class-based this year with a couple of groups set across the year group. Children will receive 10 spellings on a Friday and tested regularly.

Our PE sessions are as follows:

Class 19 – Monday and Thursday

Class 20 – Tuesday and Thursday

Class 21 – Monday and Tuesday

Please be aware that these sessions may be flexible, therefore children need a PE kit (consisting of black shorts, a white top and pumps) in school at all times. As we get into the winter months, children will need an outdoor kit. We kindly remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school except for stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines, these should not be worn on PE days.

Our residential has already been booked (March 2023) to Laches Wood. We can take the entire year group at the same time, which will allow the children to share the experience with their peers and enjoy some fantastic memories before they move on to a variety of secondary schools. More details will follow about this in the next couple of weeks.

We look forward to working with you over the next year to ensure your children have a pleasurable and valuable last year. Year 6 is a very important year, and we look forward to excellent progress being made. If you have any concerns or worries, please arrange a time to speak to one of us as you play a vital role in your child’s education.
