Elston Hall is proud to have achieved continuous accreditation of the ISA since 2010, but even prouder of our deep-sated international ethos. Learning languages has a central place within our diverse curriculum and our children learn French right from Reception until Year 6. We also celebrate the other languages spoken by our families and students.
Our thematic curriculum ensures that a diverse range of cultures and countries are experienced and that a multicultural approach to learning is an integral part of our wider curriculum. Throughout all of our re-accreditations, we have actively modified our international policy and plans to ensure they cater for our pupils, addressing and celebrating their diverse backgrounds, languages and cultures. International partnerships and shared projects with schools have evolved over the years and have had an invaluable impact on the learning and enjoyment of children from all schools involved. Well-established links continue with partner schools in Texas and Italy and Poland and our Polish HLTA is inspiring pupils to learn the Polish language and culture whilst also enhancing links with the wider Polish local community. We are also investigating new links with French speaking schools to enhance our language learning.
Our children leave us with open minds, respect, understanding, the ability to apply knowledge and a desire to learn more about the international community in which we live. Pupils voice their views and impact upon school and the wider community through Head Boy and Girl, School Council, ambassadors for reading, maths, well-being, digital, behaviour, and Eco-warriors, leading to whole school fund-raising events such as Comic Relief, Eco books and costume sales, Children in Need and also to the creation of our whole school values: Empowered, Listeners, Successful, Together, Open-minded, Nurturing: the initials of each of these values spelling out the school name.
As part of our reaccreditation application, we have 7 activities planned for our school and will share these with our partner schools in the UK and internationally. These are:

Elston celebrated the European Day
of Languages on 27th September
2024 with every year group focusing
on a different country.
Year 4 have the fabulous Mrs Sotiriou 😊 so of course, we learned about Poland!
She even got us speaking in Polish! Niesamowite!

Importance of Language
Children were asked to create a piece of work which demonstrated the importance of language to them and to others.
As you can see, many different countries and languages have been celebrated. Not only this, but children were able to explain the importance of language too, with reasons ranging from cultural identity to story-telling!
We particularly loved the pride children took when discussing different languages they spoke at home with loved ones and why they were important to them.

Children have been learning about Chinese New Year!
They discussed why it originated and how it has developed over the many years.
They also studied traditions which have been continued over time – traditions such as cleaning and they particularly enjoyed the idea of receiving money in a red envelope!
They are now able to discuss the importance of the celebration throughout history and what it means to families and the wider community.

Year 4 visited the Mosque in Wolverhampton as part of our RE learning. We met Hamza, who showed us around the mosque and answered our questions. He was very impressed with our knowledge and how much we could recall about the Islamic faith. The Mosque is beautiful and we loved looking at all the colours and patterns, particularly in the artwork and carpets. Upstairs, we saw some of the special artefacts at the Mosque, and Hamza explained the times for the five prayers a day. Tomorrow is also the start of Ramadan, which is such a special time for Muslims. Some of our children were excited to share their faith with their peers and show them the features of the Mosque.
The staff were impressed with our behaviour, our manners and our respect and calmness inside. They also said we knew such a lot about Islam and must have been listening hard and learning a lot at school.
