Welcome to Year 5

Welcome back to our last term in Year 5 - we hope that you have had an enjoyable Easter break.

Our timetable in year 5 will remain the same, however, occasionally changes will need to be made; should this be necessary we will inform you in advance.

Thematic

Our first theme this term will be a continuation of ‘Full of Beans’ “Full of Beans” is a thematic unit, with a key focus on geography. It begins with pupils learning about different types of beans; how and where they are grown and their nutritional value. They will also find out more about chocolate and how it is made. A visit from a chocolatier has been planned to end the topic. Our second theme this term will be ‘The Rescuers’ This is a competency based unit with a history focus. For more information see our curriculum overview.

PE

Please be aware that these sessions may be flexible, therefore children need a PE kit (consisting of black shorts, a white top and pumps) in school at all times. An outdoor kit is always useful to have in school, as the weather gets warmer (hopefully!) a hat/cap would be useful too. It would also be appreciated if all uniform (including PE kit and pumps) is labelled with your child’s full name and class; this helps to reunite items with their owner! Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days.

Our PE sessions are as follows – Week commencing: 8th April, 15th April

Class 16 – Wednesday and Thursday

Class 17 – Thursday (as well as Monday PM swimming)

Class 18 – Wednesday and Friday

From the 22nd April, they will then be as follows:

Class 16 – Wednesday and Thursday

Class 17 – Wednesday and Thursday

Class 18 – Monday (swimming) and Friday

Phonics

The phonics and spelling groups which began last term will continue on a weekly basis. Your child may be with a different teacher for this and will be given a set of spellings from them. In addition, all children will continue to receive 10 class spellings. Both of these will be given and tested on Fridays.

Homework

Continuing this year is our purple creative homework book; we aim for these to allow children to consolidate any learning from in school and to provide them with the opportunity to extend this learning however they wish with their family.

Reading books linked to their ability will continue, so too will the expectation of completing a reading journal on a weekly basis. As with last year, these should be handed to the class teacher or teaching assistant for them to be marked; books will then be able to be changed and the process can begin again.

A reminder that the gate to the playground will be opened at 8.45am; children should arrive after this time. This will be locked at 9:00am and any children arriving after this time will need to report to the main office.

We look forward to continue working with you and would like to thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions/queries, please do not hesitate to speak to us.
