We hope that you and your child have had a very enjoyable Summer break and we would like to welcome everyone back to the start of a new term. Children have settled back into school well and are enthusiastic to make a start on their learning.

The autumn term is always a busy time for children in Year 2. In English, we will start by writing narratives, concentrating on grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling. Children will then have the opportunity to practise these skills across a range of different texts throughout the term including information texts, stories and poems. In Maths, we will begin the term focusing on place value and securing your child’s knowledge of this.

During the first half of Autumn term we will focus on History, Art and Music. Children will have the opportunity to learn about a significant ruler from the past, drawing and mixing media and learning through song. During the second half of Autumn term we will focus on Geography, DT and Computing. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the United Kingdom, creating leavers and sliders and exploring the world of IT beyond school.

This year, we will be using the Oak National Academy curriculum to support and enhance our teaching across the Year 2 curriculum. Oak's carefully sequenced lessons help children build knowledge and skills progressively while making meaningful links across subjects where appropriate. The curriculum is designed to ensure all children receive a broad, balanced and engaging education that meets the expectations of the National Curriculum.

For more information on our learning see Curriculum Overview.

P.E.

Year 2 PE sessions are:

Class 7 –

Class 8 –

Class 9 –

Please ensure that children come to school in the correct PE kit for their sessions. Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days. Children may be asked to remove earrings before PE lessons if they are worn on those days.

Homework

Children in Year 2 receive regular homework. Spellings are given out on a Friday and tested on the following Friday. Children will bring reading books home daily, please concentrate on listening to your child read, if only for a few minutes each day. Thank you for your support at home.

Residential

Year 2 have the opportunity to take part in a wonderful two-day residential. More information later on in the term.

Morning toast will continue to be available until the close of the register, and children will also be offered a piece of fruit for their morning snack. A separate letter regarding school milk will be sent out shortly.

We kindly ask that all clothing is clearly labelled with your child's name and class. Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school every day. Bottles should contain water only and should not be made of metal as these can be quite heavy for children to carry.

We are proud to offer a wide range of after-school clubs each term. Information about our Autumn Term clubs will be sent out during the first few weeks of term.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher, who will usually be available at the end of each day. Thank you in anticipation of your continued support.
