Welcome to Year 2

We hope that you and your children have had a very enjoyable Easter break and we would like to welcome everyone back to the start of the Summer Term. We have a busy term ahead including SATs, the Olympic celebrations and last, but not least, Year 2’s Residential in June. Just a reminder that the remaining money must be paid by Friday 7th June 2024.

In English, we will continue to focus on grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling every day at the start of our English lessons. Children will have the opportunity to practise these skills across a range of different texts including information texts, stories and poems.

In Maths, we will continue to practise written and mental methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children will have opportunities to apply these methods when solving one and two-step problems. Throughout the term, children will secure their knowledge of number place value and will practise their arithmetic skills regularly while also tackling their times table superhero each week.

Thematic

We will continue with 'Going Wild'  which is our thematic unit based around humans and animals, with a science focus.

Our second theme is ‘Record Breaker’ (the story of Ranulph Fiennes) and then we will move on to ‘Come Fly With Me.

Come Fly with Me! Arctic Circle” is a thematic unit based on the Arctic region and surroundings, with a key focus on geography.

For more information see our curriculum overview.

PE

Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit in school at all times. Should you wish, PE kit and water bottles can be purchased from the school office. Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days. Children may be asked to remove earrings before PE sessions.

Year 2 PE sessions are:

Class 7 – Wednesday and Friday

Class 8 – Wednesday and Friday

Class 9 – Thursday and Friday

Homework

Children in Year 2 receive regular homework. Spellings are given out on a Friday and tested on the following Friday. We expect children to complete their reading comprehension homework after reading their books and the questions are usually found inside the front cover of their reading book. If possible, children should complete at least one comprehension per week. Additional creative homework (purple book) is also sent out 2-3 times per half term. We would like to take this opportunity to thank families for their support with homework. However, if time to complete homework is sometimes limited, please concentrate on listening to your child read, if only for a few minutes each day.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher, who will usually be available at the end of each day. Thank you in anticipation of your continued support.
