Design & Technology at Home

There are lots of simple ways you can help your child develop their interest in History at home. Talk about the past and how things have changed over time, look at old family photographs and talk to older relatives about their experiences. You could visit a museum, historic building or local landmark, explore historical places in your local area, read books set in the past.

Year 1

Children in Year 1 explored structures by designing and building their own bridges for The Three Billy Goats Gruff! They practised cutting, folding and joining materials, using their creativity and knowledge of structures to make their bridges strong and stable.

Year 3

We focussed on animation during our topic 'Thats all folks'. We created some zoetropes in the style of those used hundreds of years ago for animation and created our own design to animate. We also designed and made a flipbook which created a moving image.

Following research, children designed and made a prototype of a sleeping place suitable for a soldier. Through this experience, the children learned valuable lessons about problem-solving and collaboration.

The children's mission in Year 5 was to design and make a time keeping device suitable for an astronaut! It had the basic functions of a watch as well as additional features to fit with the astronaut's life.
